How the calendar decides a day is free, why a reservation stays on one machine, and how double-booking is prevented.

The calendar on the reservation page shows, for each period, whether you can book it. This page explains what's behind the colours.
When a day is free
A day is available (green) when at least one machine of the plan is free for that whole day. It's reserved (red) when every machine is taken. Days before the lead time or past the reservation window are not bookable and shown muted.
A machine is taken for a day when it has a paid reservation that covers it, or when someone is paying for it right now: while a customer is at checkout, their days are held for about 30 minutes. A hold that isn't paid in time is released, and the day turns green again.
One reservation, one machine
A reservation always runs on one machine, from its first minute to its last. You never get moved mid-reservation from one machine to another, and your files stay where you left them until the end.
That's why a range can be refused even when every day in it is green. Suppose a plan has two machines:

Each day has a free machine, so each day is green. But no single machine is free Monday to Wednesday, so that range can't be booked, and the calendar says "No single machine is free for that whole range". Monday alone, or Tuesday alone, works.
The calendar stays current
The calendar refreshes when you come back to the page, and you can refresh it with the button beside it. If a day you selected is booked by someone else in the meantime, your selection is adjusted and you'll see "Availability just changed — please check your selection".
If two people press Reserve for the last free machine at the same moment, exactly one gets it. The other sees "Those days were just taken", and the calendar refreshes so they can pick again.
No double-booking
Double-booking is prevented by the database itself, not just by the calendar: two reservations can never overlap on the same machine, whichever plan they were made through. If a payment completes after its hold has lapsed and the machine was taken meanwhile, we move the reservation to another free machine of the same type, or refund it in full if there's none.
